From the viewpoint of Austen, Elizabeths marriage, who finally marries Darcy, as

2、well as Jane-Bingleys, composing money and love, is the ideal marriage people. But in other marriage cases at this novel, we can see that if money and love cant be held together in one marriage, love would always make a concession to money because of the special social background. 3、e social women This novel analyses the human nature and then sticks up readers to think over social relations, it takes five ladies marriage as the thread and it covers the inheritance of fortune, womens social status, moral values and customs. 1 The Marriage Founded upon Vanity and hastiness The ma

4、rriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet is a carelessness one, a union of an intelligent man with a foolish wife. Their relationship is purely physical and based on superficial grounds. Mr. Bennets lack of satisfaction in his marriage leads him to flee himself from reality, failing to get himself and his wife

5、 to a successful relationship. Like the Bennets, the marriage between Lydia and Wickham is also flawed. Their relationship is one physical desire outweighs other reasons, with their passions stronger than their virtue. Lydias desire for social status and Wickhams desire for financial lead them to ma

6、rry for totally wrong reasons. By breaking the rules of the society, their marriage is doomed to fail. Wickhame first appears as a very charming fellow. But his character, on the contrary, was mean and immoral. His elope with Lydia is very sudden. It really leaves us room to think over his real moti

7、vation. 2 The Marriage Founded upon Benefit Charlotte seems to me is a common and vain young lady. She accepts Collins merely due to the desire of marriage. Her eager to get married prevent her from discovering Collins foolishness. We can also see her attitudes towards love and marriage from her wor

8、ds “Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance. If the dispositions of the parties are ever so well known to each other, or ever so similar before-hand, it doesnt advance their felicity in the least. They always contrive to grow sufficiently unlike afterwards to have their share of vexatio

9、n; and it is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the person with whom you are to pass your life.“(Austen ,1994) That is her idea of marriage, which accounts for her quick marriage with Collins, is only help her to get away from poverty and social isolation. Generally, in this nove

10、l, Charlotte Lucas presents a material view on marriage, declaring that “happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance”. Her marriage to Mr. Collins is to gain in establishment and acquire social standing and economic stability. From Charlotte Lucas, Austen illustrates the economic and social

11、 plight faced by unmarried women in the eighteenth century. While the Collins relationship has social standing and economic security, it is entirely deficient in the affection and intellectual union that Austen regards as quintessential in a true marriage. 3 The Marriage Founded upon Same Interests

12、According to the relationship between Bingley and Jane, love and similar interests are the basic factors of a successful and happy marriage. Bingley is not the man who is strong and determined. When their romance goes smoothly, his sudden departure nearly ends his happy love. The cause of his depart

13、ure attributed to Darcy. His attachment to Jane is obvious, but his modest let misunderstanding of Janes indifference. Darcy sees that Jane like Bingley, but he do not believe her to be in love. Under the influence of Mr. Darcy, Bingley begin to doubt Janes affection. He left her without saying good

14、-bye. Later, when all misunderstanding clarified, he came back to Jane with Darcys help. Bingleys infirm character determines that his happiness controlled by others. With many similarities in character, people can understand each other easily. Most important of all, the couple with similar interest

15、s can live together with a happy life, because there can understand, help and support each other. They dont care the defects of their partners and even they dont see any drawbacks in each other. Just as the old saying going, “Birds of a feather flock together, people of a mind fill into the same gro

16、up”. By comparison with all other marriages in the novel, Elizabeth and Darcys is the ideal by Austens standards-meeting of love, character and fortune. Theirs is a relationship of mutual respect and love, based on moral integrity and an understanding of each other, while possessing economic wealth

17、and status. 4 The Marriage Founded upon True Love The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice contains one of the most cherish love stories in English literature. As in any good love story, the lovers must with tensions at beginning caused by the lovers own personality, then, ove

18、rcome numerous difficulties. Elizabeths pride enables misjudge Darcy on the basis of a poor at first impression, while Darcys prejudice against Elizabeths poor social standing blinds him to her virtues. Of course, some people also say that Elizabeth is guilty of prejudice and Darcy of pridethe title

19、 cuts both ways. Austen also puts many small obstacles to the love between Elizabeth and Darcy, including Lady Catherines attempt to control her nephew, Miss Bingleys snobbery, Mrs. Bennets foolish, and Wickhams cheat. All these cause her prejudice and ignorance, when she encounters their affairs. S

20、he would not be able to distinguish the right and the wrong. However, finally she has to face them and insist on for their love. Darcy and Elizabeths realization of mutual and love is to present Austen views that love as something independent of these social forces, as something that can be captured

21、 if only an individual is able to escape the warping effects of hierarchical society. Austen use cynical story to reveal about true love, with the character of Charlotte Lucas, who marries Mr. Collins, and the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Ben- net, Wickhame and Lydia to demonstrate that marriage based o

22、n other factors is wrong. Austen suggests that true love is a force separate from society which can conquer no matter how difficulties of circum- stances between them. 5. Austens Concept about Love and Marriage The author embodies five different marriages in the novel. From the analysis of the marri

23、ages, we can find the authors idea about mar- riage: marriage and property and social status are interconnected. But marriage could not only depend on the property and the social status. The happy marriage should be based on the mutual respect, mutual admiration. She objects the marriage for money a
