1、Literature Review The Application of Contrastive Method in Teaching English Grammar of Compound Sentences In English grammatical learning, compound sentence is one of the difficulties confronting ESL learners. The causes of the difficulties are mainly attributed to two factors: 1) complexity in stru
2、cture; 2) easy confusion in association with other congeneric sentences. For instance, two choices are provided-“that” and “where” in the sentence “Is this the school _ you visited last year?” Based on elementary knowledge, no matter whether “that” or “where” is selected, “you visited last year” is
3、an attributive clause. It is obvious that this sentence is grammatically incomplete, since there is no object following the word “visit”, which is a transitive verb. Therefore, the introductory word must be “that”, which introduces an attributive clause and simultaneously can function as a component
4、 in the clause, namely subject or object. The study of English grammar can be traced back to the 6th century, during which occurred a period of anti-teaching of English grammar. The traditional English grammar became prevailing in the 17th and 18th century. With the perfection of linguistics and the
5、 theories of language teaching, the significance of grammar to TESL has been increasingly recognized till now. It is especially important to an ESL abecedarian who tries to establish a favorable English foundation. As a Chinese ESL learner, his or her English competence is expressed mostly in writin
6、g and reading, including various examinations, such as CET4 conversely, it cannot be and in addition poses a equal relationship to the subordinate clause, then it is defined as appositive clause. Take an instance: 1) We must face the fact/one that might make us miss our chance 2) We must face the fa
7、ct/one that we might miss our chance. Another comparison is made between attributive clauses with a preposition advanced and object clauses led by a preposition. The approach suggested to differentiating these two types of clauses is that with preposition removed, if the conjunction can function as
8、a component, then it is attributive clause; conversely, object clause. 1) Have you met the girl about whom the boy was speaking? 2) Have you told the girl about what the boy used to be? More approaches suggested by Liu are introduced and employed in the thesis, with which to distinguish the congener
