This article starts from Charles Dickenss novel Dombey and Son, and explores the British social and cultural development. Combining th

9、e time background and the current status of British society, it analyzes the reason why there are so many social and cultural problems. Through Dombey and Son, lets see where the British social and cultural development should go, on the basis of plot reproduction. Expounding the social existence det

Introduction The world today is undergoing extensive and profound changes, the development of Britain is facing unprecedented opportunities, as well as unprecedented challenges, but there are more opportunities t

Facing with more whitewater rapids, dealing with more risks and challenges, to let “the British“ ship cleave through the waves, sing forward, we must establish the social and cultural development road with British characteristic and always adhere to the orientation of advanced cultur

15、e, and give full play to the role of social and cultural dynamic. Victorian Britain is also in an era of change, the social and cultural problems it reflected also apply equally to the contemporary British society. This article starts from the works of Charles Dickens Dombey and Son, explores the Br

20、n. II. Background Information 2.1 Time Background Charles Dickens was born in the Victorian period. The Victorian period was an era of change. In the thirty or forty years of the nineteenth century, as the industrial revolution has infiltrated every aspect of British society, great changes also had

Politically, the contradiction between the emerging class and the old power was weakening, the struggle of the working class and the bourgeoisie was becoming the main contradiction of British society. The social wealth was increasing, but the people were

22、still living in hardship. Represented by the workers, the Chartist Movement rose one after another, which caused dissatisfaction of each social strata. Britain is in “the early stage of storm”. Economically, Britain has accumulated a lot of wealth in the way of developing overseas market and colonia

23、l exploitation, and primitive accumulation of capital reached its peak period. Meanwhile, a variety of scientific inventions and technology innovation has brought the new blood to the British economy, such as trains, steamship, printing machine, textile machine and so on. The import and export trade

24、 developed greatly, Britain once has been called the “world factory“. However, in face of the material desire that stimulated by the free economy, the British people lost their spiritual pursuit, lowered their cultural taste, became a culture beggar, and resulted in a “cultural desert“. The British people became increasingly capitalized, social moral got increasingly degenerated, human emotion got increasingly indifferent, and the money worship prevailed.
