、1Adidass sales up 7% in Greater ChinaGerman sportswear and gear company Adidas published its report for 2013 financial year in early March. With the static exchange rate, the companys revenue had a 3% increase year on year while the sales in Greater China (Hongkong, Taiwan and Macau included) hit 1.

、655 billion euros, up 7%. However, if the floating exchange rate is applied, the groups actual revenue worldwide last year was 14.492 billion euros, down 3%, and the net profits amounted to 767 million euros. Adidas did not have good performance in the first three quarters of 2013. In the first nine

、 months of that year, its revenue reached 11.013 billion euros, down 4% from a year before. However, it met a drastic turn in the last quarter as the revenue increased by 12% with the static exchange rate. Its retail business and other businesses respectively increased by 15% and 28%. The wholesale

、business increased by 8%. In Greater China, Adidass sales revenue increased by 8% in the fourth quarter of 2013. Due to the decrease in Italy, UK and Spain, Adidas had to endure the 6% decrease in West Europe. This deficit was 2somewhat offset by the 4% increase in emerging European market and the 2

、% increase in North American market. In the Asian-Pacific area, the Indian, South Korean and Australian markets made great contributions to the 5% sales increase of Adidas in this area. However, this achievement could not even begin to compare with the result in Latin America, where Adidas saw the s

、ales increase by 19%. Of all the Latin American countries, Argentina, Columbia and Mexico made the largest increase. Adidas forecast that the important sports event would be a powerful catalyst for the sales increase in 2014. As the official partner with the Brazilian World Cup, Adidas is doubtlessl

、y to be most attention-worthy brand by then. Therefore, Adidas believes that the sales in the soccer sector will hit the historical high in this year. One looming danger for Adidas is the floating exchange rate. Adidas CEO Herbert Hainer said that “the negative influence from the exchange rate pulle

、d our sales income down nine percent in the fourth quarter.” Justin Yifu Lin: widening wealth gap is a result of the poors subsidies for the rich When present in the 2nd Nobel Prize Summit, Justin Yifu 3Lin, the famous economist and a member of Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference, said

、 that the corruption, embezzlement and bribery were rooted in the double-track system implemented in Chinas economic transformation and it co-exists with the fast economic development. As Lin said, in the 1980s and 1990s, when the plan-oriented economy was shifted to the market-oriented economy, Chi

、na followed a step-by-step and double-track system. On one hand, the capital-intensive state-owned enterprises still receive the protection as they did in the era of plan-oriented economy. On the other hand , the labor-intensive industries were opened, allowing the entities ? like private and foreig

、n investors ?to get in. “What are the advantages of this economic change pattern? It helped to stabilize the society, evading the economic downturn in Soviet Union and East Europe where the shock therapy was used. Chinas economy remains stable and several industries got fast development. However, th

、ere are side effects too, which are the income distribution and the corruption, two hot topics under the spotlight now, ” Lin said. Why did this happen? As Lin explained, the change to the traditional capital-intensive industries is mainly done through 4the intervention in the market factors. Of all

、 the industries, the financial industry is the most representative one. In the past 30 years of economic shift in China, the reform targeted placing the financial industry under the control of the market. But by now, the financial market of China is still dominated by the big banks and stock market.

、 And most of those entities financing through big banks and stock market are large enterprises, previously only stateowned enterprises but now some private enterprises joining in the rank. This renders the small- and medium-sized enterprises, which contribute 70% of the jobs and account for 60% of t

、he national economy, unable to raise the capital and enjoy the financial services. The inequality in the services is unmatched in the capital price. According to Justin Yifu Lin, those able to raise funds from financial channels are given price manually lowered no matter they raise funds from stock

、market and banks. That means the big enterprises ? the rich? can get the national subsidies more easily than the small entities, or the poor. “Who give subsidies to these enterprises are to place the money into the financial service system. Those unable to get the financial services are relatively p

、oor. The money of the 5poor is supplied to the rich for their operation, causing the gap to be widened further and further. This is also the hotbed for the corruption. In a manner of speaking, these problems co-exist with the fast economic development in China.” China is to support the circuit indus

、try from four aspects The Chinese government attaches unprecedented importance to the semiconductor and integrated circuit industry. On March 16, IC Market China 2014, which was co-sponsored by Chinese Association of Semi-Conductor and China Institute of Electronics and Information Development, was

、held in Wuxi, Jiangsu, in which the leaders of Chinas Ministry of Industry and Information Technologies (MIIT) , for the first time disclosed the four directions of the supporting polices for the circuit industry. According to the statistical data from Chinese Association of Semi-Conductor, the semi

、-conductor industry in China has been developing for several straight years. In 2014, the sales in the integrated circuit industry went up 20% and the market volume is going to exceed 300 billion yuan. Peng Hongbing, deputy director of the MIITs Electronic Department, said that the government paid c

、lose attention to the development of integrated circuit industry and is going to 6issue a series of policies to support the development of this industry. The supporting polices include the setup of the long-time effective system to coordinate the supporting policies of central and local governments,

、 solutions to the fundraising problem that has strangled the integrate circuit industry for long by guiding the social investment into the industry and opening the industry to foreigners to encourage the Sinoforeign cooperation. According to Shi Lei, vice president of Chinese Association of SemiCond

、uctor, the fast development of strategic emerging industries has brought strong support to the integrated industry of China. In 2014, the global semiconductor industry is going to keep its development trend while being pushed by the industries of mobile Internet and wearable technologies. The global

、 market volume is expected to rise to US$318.1 billion. In China the sales amount will be higher than 300 billion yuan and this vigorous trend is going to be continued in the next few years. A source confirmed that the meeting happened in February 2014 and the topic centered around connecting China Telecoms CDMA EV-DO 3G network to Teslas Model S. But the source also said that the two companies just began to talk with each

、 other and no agreements had been reached by now. Tesla attaches great importance to the vehicle-borne network. At the end of 2013, Tesla signed a contract with AT&T, allowing the latter to provide high-speed network services to the cars in the U.S. The wireless network will support the long-distanc

Because China Telecom uses the same CDMA system with AT&T, Tesla placed China Telecom onto the first position in the list of possible partners in wireless network con

、nection in China. The new urbanization pattern features intensive development The central government issued the 2014-2020 Plan of the New Urbanization of China (hereafter the Plan) , which was established as the strategic, macroscopic and fundamental planning for the healthy development of urbanizat

、ion in China. 8The urbanization is an essential part of the modernization and the key to solving the problem of peasants employment. The Plan aims at bringing about the best effect of the urbanization to Chinese economic development. The Plan at first revealed the problems that need to be addressed

、during the process of urbanization. The massive peasants moving into the urban society find it hard to integrate themselves into the society. The “urbanization of land” is faster than the “urbanization of people”. The land is poorly used, leading to the unreasonable space arrangement and city size.

、The urban management level stays low, highlighting the “urban problems”. The natural and historical sites are not well protected. The urban construction followed the same pattern. To address these problems, the Plan put forward five goals. The first goal is to improve the level and quality of urbani

、zation. The urbanization should be progressed normally and healthily. The population residing in cities is expected to take 60% of the total population while 45% of the total population has the registered urban identity. The second goal is to optimize the urbanization situation. The “two eastwest ax

、is and three south-north axis”should be 9the core of the urbanization in geography. The economy and population should be apparently enhanced in the city clusters. The competitiveness of the city clusters in East China should be improved to the international level and the cities in Central and West C

、hina should play the key roles in the local development. The size of each city cluster should be arranged more scientifically with several central areas leading the force and increasing number of smaller cities with improved functions. The third goal is to adopt a more scientific and reasonable deve

、lopment pattern, which turns to the intensive mode featuring high intensity, comprehensive functions and transit-oriented philosophy. The per capita land for urban construction is to be limited within 100 square meters and the population density in already-built urban area should be increased gradua

、lly. The green production and consumption are to be established as the mainstream of the urban life and the proportions of water-saving products, recyclable products and green buildings are to be dramatically improved. The underground networks will have a bigger coverage as well. The fourth goal is

、to advocate the easy and people-friendly urban life. The compulsory education, employment service, 10senior care, healthcare and indem- nificatory housing are to cover all the permanent residents. The infrastructure and public facilities are to be further improved to bring about a more convenient ci

、rcumstance for consumption. The air quality and drinking water quality are to get better as an important part of the urban environmental and ecological protection. The natural wonders and cultural relics are to be well protected. All in all, the urban development should be people-oriented, intellige

、nce-based and individualized. The fifth goal requires the continuous improvement of system and mechanism of urbanization, covering the systems residential permit, land management, social securities, financial and tax, administrative management and ecological betterment. The issuance of the Plan is c

、omprehensively thought to highlight the people-oriented urbanization. It is widely believed that China still has a large space to improve its urbanization rate. As the urbanization goes further and better, the need for railways, highways, as well as the demand for electric power, water and gas, will emerge among the new and existing cities. This will mean a lot of investment and untold job opportunities.
