Sex discrimination has a great influence in many aspects on our social life. Among all of those, the
2、languages we use every day are deeply influenced by sex discrinimation. English, as an ancient and widely used language, gives us a lot of evidence for its sex discrinimation agaist females. Since the feminist movement in the 1960s, the world has paid more and more attention to sexism against female
3、s and sexism in English language which has been an important subject for feminist liguistics. This study will focus on the sexism in English languange from linguistic perspective. Sexism in English refers to the sex bias in the widely used languageEnglish. Many people speaking or writing in English
4、today wish to avoid using language which supports unfair or untrue attitudes to a particular sex, usually women. This study is going to do a detailed research on the topic of sexism in English from linguistic perspective. Sexism is not something existing only in English or any other languages, and i
5、t exists in peoples minds. There will be no solution to sexism in English if we just stay on the level of language, so it is a problem that will be solved only when a great many people have given it a great deal of thought, and the final solution lies in real equality of social status. The reasons f
6、or sexism, generally speaking, can be devided into two: the historical reason and the social one. These two reasons are closely associated with each other. Men s advantages in physical ability and power enable them to gradually gain dominance in politics, economy and culture. As a rusult, English is
7、 deeply influenced by sexism and many of them even are ignored by most of us. Many scholars have paid years of hard working in order to analyse sexism in 2 different aspects, such as word formation, word meaning, expressions. Jing, Liangliang, from Zhongbei University, has given us an excellent writ
8、ing on sexism in English from linguistic aspect. In his work he presented us a lot of facts for sexism in English from both word formation and expressions. English proverbs, as an important part of English language, have been studied by many scholars and some of those choose to focus on sexism in En
9、glish proverbs, which seems to be a very obvious characteristic of English proverbs. Zhang,lina has pubished a paper on this topic. In the paper, she classified English proverbs into four parts including social status, marriage, behaiour and intelligence, and pointed out sex discrimination in these
10、parts. Some other scholars devote themsleves to the study of sexism in English naming and addressing terms, especially for the addressing terms in English. Taking the word “master” for example, master is used to appreciate an intellgent male, but such words are absent in the caes of female. Taking m
11、ale as norm while female as adjunct is the most obvious characteristic of sexist English, which is a direct reflection of mens dominance in society. This study will talk about sexism from a linguistic view. Many of the important ideas mentioned before will be involved in this study, especially sexis
12、m reflected in different aspects of English language. In order to have a more clear and organized essay, this study will analyse English language from three aspects, including word fromation, word meaning and expressions. With this study, the readers will have a clear understandng of sexism in Engli
13、sh, what the defination of sexism in English language is, how sexism is reflected in English language and the development in morden English language. 3 课题研究的主要内容、预期目标和研究方案 This study will be divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction of this study, In this part, the study will talk
14、about four major parts, including the defination of sexism, the defination of sexism in language, the historical and social reasons for sex discrimination, and finally the theme of the studysexism in English will be mentioned. The second part is a detailed analysis of sexism reflected in English lan
15、guage and it will be analysed in three aspects. In the third, the development and trend of sexism in language will be discussed. The efforts of feminists since 1960s and the contribution they made to the equality of female in English linguistic perspective are also involved in this part. The last pa
16、rt is the conclusion of this thesis, which is a general review of the above analysis and states the significance of this thesis writing.
