Stevenson 1. 课题研究意义及国内外研究现状 This thesis attempts to analyze peoples dual personality, advocating them to show their true self rather than hide it in the condition of objective reality and avoid their sw

2、ell of evil, in order to develop a healthy personality. This study is from the psychological view of actualization to reveal the relationship among real self, ideal self and self-actualization to provide readers an original and rational understanding of the hero and a more profound knowledge of the

3、creation and social values of the novel. R. L. Stevenson (1850-1894) was one of the greatest romantic writers in the Victorian English literature time. He was born in Scotland. The versatile writer grew up weakly and sickly, and subsequently progressed to tuberculosis. Although qualified as a solici

4、tor when he was twenty-five years old, he had little taste for the law. And then he began writing, and in all his life he had never been a real practicing solicitor. In his short lifetime, he had written amounts of essays, travels and poetries. Treasure Island, published in 1883, made him famous as

5、his first novel work. In 1886, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Kidnapped had jumped to the best-sellers, which laid his unwavering writer status stably. The great writer suffered cerebral hemorrhage for a long time, and accidentally died in 1894, when he was only forty years old. His representative work

6、s are Sir Walter Scott, Treasure Island and so on. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde immediately became a classic after it was published in 1886. In the months after the publication, the book was reprinted several times, and was adapted as movies, television dramas, musicals and other forms. This novel is uni

7、que in Stevensons entire novel works. It is a satire on human nature of the dual character of the novel, and it also describes the mental activity of suspense horror story about a similar weird science fiction story. The entire novel is enveloped in a terrible and disturbing cloud, but not in the sc

8、ene of terror murders, but 2 rather the psychological description of Dr. Jekyll. The hero Dr. Jekyll is a cultured and beloved doctor with various evil subconscious thoughts. He invented a drug, and then he could drink himself into another ugly and outrageous Mr. Hyde. Originally, Dr. Jekyll changed

9、 himself into Mr. Hyde for a great joy and freedom. Later, he was filled with a sense of despair, anxiety and regret of Mr. Hydes devilry. Hovering between good and evil and suffering much mental and physical torture, ultimately, Dr. Jekylls inmost goodness was less able to suppress the evil side. F

10、inally, he chose to commit suicide to get rid of the abhorrent Hyde. By now, this novel has invited a large number of studies and commentaries all over the world. These scholars and critics provide us with different interpretations of the novel from different views, including the concept of original

11、 sin, criticism of anthropocentrism, the evolution of human society, etc. Some scholars holding the concept of original sin consider that R.L. Stevenson uses this consciousness to analyze good and evil and explain the delicate relationship between original sin and humanity. Christianity indicates th

12、at original sin is the root of crimes and evils, which leads human toward the abyss of evil and makes them difficult to extricate. In the novel, Dr. Jekylls evil side is his inner consciousness of original sin. He is always ready to make troubles, violating a number of rules and prohibitions, which

13、is contrary to the good in his inner world. When the evil reaches the summit, he begins to regret and miss the peace thought. Finally, he chooses self-destruction to deviate from the evil. Turning to criticism of anthropocentrism, some scholars believe that Jekyll is self-centered. In the name of sc

14、ience, he releases his desires and impulses, ignoring the order of nature, and ultimately becomes a victim of anthropocentrism. In terms of the evolution of human society, some scholars agree that this novel is born in the Victorian period, and Darwins evolutionism develops into a new climax. Humans

15、 are contented about the interpretation of evolutionism, but they ignore the social crisis coming along with the social evolution. Evil in the social progress will be amplified, and eventually become a powerful destruction to civil society. These scholars, to some extent, criticize Darwins theory of

16、 evolution that brings about abnormal 3 behaviors, psychology and social phenomenon. All the studies and commentaries above can help us have a better understanding of the novel. However, this thesis focuses on the novel itself to analyze and advocate self-actualization. As American Psychologist C. R

17、ogers proposed that everyone has two selves: real self and ideal self. The former is a personal gain from real life, while the latter is about individual ideal state. Only the real self and ideal self combine at the same time, can people achieve self-actualization which is the achievement of healthy

18、 personality. 课题研究的 主要内容、预期目标和研究方案 This thesis will consist of five chapters. The beginning chapter will give an introduction to its significance and framework of the whole thesis. The following chapter is a general introduction to R. L. Stevenson and his masterpiece Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It will

19、 discuss the lifetime of R. L. Stevenson and her awareness towards self-actualization. The plot and the writing background will be included in the novels introduction part. Self-actualization will be adopted to interpret the novel in the third chapter. On the one hand, it will give an interpretation

20、 of self-actualization, including the definition and other great masters works about it. On the other hand, it will adopt the self-actualization approach to study Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Chapter Four is to illustrate R. L. Stevensons other works, and to discuss self-actualization in those works in

21、order to give a comprehensive understanding about self-actualization of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
