1、本科毕业论文开题报告 英语 A Study of the Narrative of The Color Purple 1. 课题研究意义及国内外研究现状 Alice Walker (1944) is one of the most influential African American writers of the contemporary period. Walker is a novelist, a critic and a poet as well. Her works is about the life and experience of the black people espec

2、ially the black women under patriarchal and racial oppression, and their pursuit of liberation, religious belief, dignity and their fight for survival whole. She is the first black woman novelist to win the Puliter Prize for her most famous novel The Color Purple (1982) which was also awarded the Am

3、erican Book Award in 1983. Even though The Color Purple revolves the lesbian relationship, nasty language, domestic violence and is attacked by many people, it is still said to be a classic book in provoking the awakening of the black women. The novel is composed of 92 letters. Among all the letters

4、, Celie writes over two thirds to God, one sixth to her sister Nettie, and one sixth Nettie writes to Celie. Since its publication, the novel has been explored by many critics at home and abroad. In abroad, many people study The Color Purple from various topics. Bell (2007) considers that Walkers be

5、st novel is The Color Purple. Bell argues that its unrelenting, severe attack on male hegemony, especially on the violent abuse of black women by black men, is offered as a revolutionary leap forward into a new social order based on sexual egalitarianism.( Bell. 2007, p.157) In terms of the nameless

6、 or withholding in The Color Purple, Brogan (2000) exposes the blank name of “Mister_“ in The Color Purple initially has the potential for representing any abusive male (p.193). Besides, Heglar (2000) points out that namelessness and naming become a significant pattern as the novel unfolds. (p.38) A

7、ccording to Heglar, mens patriarchal authority is diminished by erasing or withholding mens surnames, comparatively, women gradually become powerful and could challenge the male dominance. As for the male figures, Millard (2006) explains that The Color Purple is not only about Women. The male also c

8、an help themselves to live with female in a harmony circumstance. Harpo also learns not to live according to gender stereotypes by which he oppresses both Sofia and himself.(p.73) The juke joint built by Harpo attracts no customers until the presence of Shug Avery. The juke joint is a symbolic space

9、 that he has created and which becomes a showcase for the narrative talents of women such as Shug and Mary Agnes. (p.74) For the main character Celie, Pifer and Slusser (1998) make it clear that mirroring scenes have obviously played an important role in Celies self-discovery. Walker herself points

10、to the importance of such scenes. To Giddings she says, “I dont think you can do anything without help. In order to see the back of your head, you need a mirror to look into“ (p.60) It is under Shugs help, that Celie begin care about herself and her sexual feelings. In other words, she has finished

11、the self-discovery and really takes pleasure in herself. In addition, Cutter tries to analyze the rape archetype in The Color Purple by introducing a raped girl- Philomelas story. Cutter (2000) also points out that Walker does more than simply allow Philomela to speak within the confines of patriarc

12、hal discourse. Walkers novel revises the mirth of Pilomela by creating a heroines test that reconfigures the rhetorical situation of sender-receiver-massage and articulates celies movement away from an existence as a victime in a patriarchal plot toward a linguistic and narratological presence as th

13、e author/subject of her own story.(p.163) Domestically, Ma Yue (2009) noticed that Alice walker has a deeper understanding on the emancipation of the African American women. The womenism she has proposed are affirmed in the novel. ( Ma Yue,2009, p.80) In the opinion of Ma Yue, Walker does not just c

14、oncern at the surface of racial discrimination. African American females not only suffer the sex discrimination in family, but also are unequally treated in whole society. The sisterhood between African American females provides them with love and confidence, plus the root-seeking consciousness. The

15、y finally can recognize themselves and find the meaning of life. Besides Ma Yue, Li Bing studies The Color Purple mainly from the body narrative. In her abstract Li Bing (2010) said the body narrative of the oppressed black women tells the fact that they suffered a double hardshipracial and sexual d

16、iscriminations in American society. The female body is in pain because it is the socially inscribed emblem on which the patriarchal power secures its dominance and it is the mirror that reflects social and historical situation. Showing the significance of black female body, walker helps them find th

17、e identity of themselves, and resist the double oppressions.(p.68) Although these studies and commentaries are still not enough, all of these make us have a better understanding about The Color Purple. This thesis will look into the narrative feature of The Color Purple by revealing the narrative de

18、vices. By analyzing these narrative features, this thesis penetrates the African American females life situation and the chance for them to change. In addition, it reminds people of the inequality, the darkness and misery caused by the discrimination and makes people perceive the considerable import

19、ance of equality between black and white. 课题研究的主要内容、预期目标和研究方案 The present dissertation consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction of the writer and the novel. The second part and the third part study the narrative of The Color Purple with the help of narrative theory. The fourth part

20、 is polyphony. The Color purple has two narrators, one is Celie, and the other is natty. Polyphony shows different scenes in this novel and makes us have a good knowledge about the African American in that time. The fifth part is a conclusion where restatement is made to serve for the thesis proposa

21、l. The relationship between narrative and The Color Purple will be reaffirmed briefly and profoundly.
