1、 1 Literature Review The Art of Satire in Gullivers Travels The art of satire is used to uncover and criticize the weak points and some mistakes. One of the most famous books is Jonathan Swifts master work, Gullivers Travels. Satire mood takes effect on the fiction, it contains many key elements in

It includes plot arrangement, suspense manufacturing, conflict produced, character molding, etc. It is generally said that the power of plot development in a good fiction often comes from the satire mood. In the novel, we can see that one of Swifts primary targets is 18th century British, especi
3、ally the modern system of laws in his times for their limited and misguided version of human nature-a satire attack in many ways that still is agreeable today. To show its deep frustration of life, Swift uses the art of satire to attack the dark reality. To know more about it, I have collected some
4、materials from both library and Internet. The following are those materials that guide me and will apply in this paper. Xiang Ningshuang(2010) has summarized the art of satire in Gullivers Travels. She divides the use of satire into four factors namely, mood, layout, plot and characters, and then di
5、scusses every factor of satire individually. Satire is a kind of art which contributes to promoting plot development, manufacturing suspense, producing conflict, molding characters, etc. So I will pay more attention to the different effects that irony produces in different elements of the novel. Ana
6、lysis of the Satirical Art in Jonathan Swifts Gullivers Travels was written by Xiong Yunpu and Zhang Yangli(2008). From the analysis of the novel, the writers describe how the language has influenced the language description and narrative variation, in order to satirize the defect and the stain of t
7、he human nature. In my thesis writing, I will learn the language features of the novel from their studies. Xiong Yunpu and Zhang Yangli set several examples to support their points. Whats more, their study can show the functions of the art of satire. 2 In the first part, they use four points in thei
8、r thesis to show the value of satire, satirizing the vulgarity of European languages. Secondly, they begin to discuss the narrative variation. It is a kind of skills with the unique writing technique that the writer made the novel more impressive. In the third part, the writers mention the social me
9、aning of the novel. It satirizes every defects and stains of the human nature. Irony with strong feeling and calm feeling: To compare the irony of Gullivers Travels and Animal Farm, was written by Nie Sumin(2003). In this thesis, the writer emphasizes the art of satire might have varying ironic degr
10、ees for the ironic strength is different in different articles, though the same ironic ways have been adopted. Personally speaking, it is very interesting for readers to understand the influence of irony. Nie Sumin compares two kinds of satire, in order to tell the readers that there are also a lot
11、of ironic expression methods. The art of satire in Gullivers Travels written by Lv Yumei(2004) is initially a guidebook for readers to study satire. She mentioned that the book inherited European writing style. In the four part, Jonanthan Swift used four kinds of satire. The first part, Liliput Trav
12、el, has obvious fairy tale color, it is more than a political allegory. The second part, Brobdingnag Travel, has the utopia color mirroring the social ideals of the writer. The third part involved different elements, such as scientific research and culture and human history. The last part, The count
13、ry of the Houyuhums, can be reduced to beast fable. In my thesis writing, I will study the ironic words, sentences, and writing styles, in order to find the strong ironic effect in the novel.
