5、,谭恩美根据外婆和母亲的经历,写成了小说喜福会 。本文的主要内容旨在分析喜福会中四对母女之间存在的文化冲突以及文化冲突产生的原因,探究促使两种文化共存的方式。 第一部分 主要介绍了作者的生平以及喜福会的主要内容,并分析了其写作背景。第二部分从以四对母女的故事为经纬,从教育方式、婚姻观和价值观,分析了小说中中国母亲和美国化的女儿之间的冲突。第三部分从跨文化的角度分析了两种不同的文化背景是冲突产生的主要原因,其中涉及到了“边缘”文化和“东方主义”。东方主义着重体现在两代人之间的产生的冲突上,母亲在封建中国的苦难经历和从小说中的母女关系中体现的“父权制”。第四部分主要通过小说中的母女关系的变化探究两

7、of Chinese American writers who have been living under the backgrounds of two different cultures. In1987, Amy Tan finished The Joy Luck Club based on the experiences of her grandmother and mother. The main content of this thesis aims to analyze the cultural conflicts between mothers and daughters an

8、d the causes of the cultural conflict, and to explore the way of coexistence. The first part mainly introduces the writer, the main content of The Joy Luck Club and the writing background. The second part analyzes the conflicts between Chinese mother and Americanized daughters from three aspects: ed

9、ucation style, marriage and the values. The third part analyzes two different cultural backgrounds from the perspective of cross-culture, and it is the main cause of the conflict, which refers to “edge” culture and “orientalism”. Orientalism focuses on the conflict between two generations, the mothe

10、rs traumatic experiences in the feudal China and the “patriarchy”. The fourth part explores the ways of coexistence according to the shifty relationship between mothers and daughters. This is also a creation goal that the author finally wants to express. The author clarifies that two conflicting cul

11、tures will finally go to coexistence. And this transition reflects the clash, communication and proper attitude like communication, understanding, and respect required by culture coexistence. From The Joy Luck Club we can know that the coexistence of different cultures really needs respects and unde

13、r, was born in Oakland, California in 1952. She started writing novels since she was thirty three years old. In 1987, according to the experience of her grandmother and mother, she wrote a novel called The Joy Luck Club, and in 1989, the book was published. The publishing of the book wins a great su

14、ccess, it continues 40 weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list. The Joy Luck Club was based on the story of four mothers and daughters, vividly describing the relationship between mothers and daughters, and it laid her reputation in the literary world. My paper aims to explore and analyze The J

15、oy Luck Club from the perspective of cultural conflict, in order to get the readers to understand this famous books deeper meaning. Cultural conflict is always one of the most heated questions for the Chinese American writer who have been living in the east and western cultures. From The Joy Luck Cl

16、ub, we can analyze the cultural conflicts between four Chinese American mothers and daughters and how they solve these cultural conflicts so to harmoniously coexist from three parts, namely, education styles, marriage values, values, we thus know that the coexistence of different cultures really req

17、uire mutual respects and understanding, and love and faith are always the bridge of the mind, and the link of connecting world. Through two months efforts in reading, searching, collecting an ambulance of scholars and professors literature concerning Amy Tan and her The Joy Luck Club, I create the f

18、ollowing essay to summarize the essence of the literature. 1 Overview of The Joy Luck Club and Amy Tan 1.1 Brief Introduction of the Author Amy Tan, a famous Chinese-American writer, she was born in California Auckland of the United States in 1952. She grew up and accepted middle and primary school

19、education in Californias Santa Clara. In 1968, she moved with her mother to Switzerland because of her fathers death, but in 1969, she came back to California into San Jose City College. In 1973, she obtained a masters degree in linguistics the next year. After her graduation, she married Couis De M

20、attei. Since 1987, she has become very interested in writing novels. In 1993, Tans adaptation of her first novel, The Joy Luck Club, became a commercially successful film, and it made Tan famous. Tan has also written several other bestselling books, such as The Kitchen Gods Wife, The Hundred Secret

21、Senses, The Bonesetters Daughter and Saving Fish from Drowning and so on. Most of Tans works are about herself experiences, and she is good at describing the emotional entanglement between the mothers and daughters. 23、e Background of the Novel The Joy Luck Club is a bestselling novel written by Amy Tan. In 1987, Tan completed The Joy Luck Club based on her mother and grandmothers experience. When it was published in 1989, it won a lot of writers support and love and the books publishing got a great success, it co

24、ntinued 40 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, sales of 5 million copies, and won the National Book Award. After it was made into a movie, was widely appreciated. This novel describes the experience of four women from mainland China to the United States before liberation. The four women acq

25、uaint themselves with each other by playing mahjong. They became closed friends because of their similar experiences. As a mother, each of them has a lot of problems with their daughter. This novel describes the relationship between The Joy Luck Club mothers and daughters, and their cultural conflic

26、ts. It represents the process from misunderstanding, conflicts to understanding and the harmony between mother and daughters. Mothers are the first immigrants from China, but in their deep mind, they kept the traditional Chinese culture. Although they came to America, they dont forget their sufferin

27、g experience in China, and their traditional views can not be changed. But their daughters grew up in America and lived in the American culture. Different culture must lead to conflicts, so this novels background based on different cultures conflicts and coexistence. 1.2.2 The Main Content of the No

28、vel This novel mainly tells the relationship between four mothers and daughters. Woman LinDo when she was five years old, LinDo was ordered to be a child bride for a rich family. When she grew up, she had to marry a boy that she had never met, but she was always remembering her mothers words: never

29、forget who you are. On the wedding night, she revolted, and in the next days she used her strategy to get a ticket to Shanghai and left that rich family. A woman who can use trick to change her tragic life must be very tough and smart, but when this kind of tough and smart personality met her own da

30、ughter, it is a big disaster. Her daughter, Waverly, was good at chess and always be the champions, but she hated and felt shy about that her mother was always flaunting for this thing, so they fought again and again. When she grew up, they fought for marriage. The second mother and daughter are Yin

31、gYing and Lena. When YingYing was young, she fell in love with a man who really was infact a playboy. Nearly two years painful marriage depressed her severely, and finally, she whispered “he took away my youth, love, and ignorance, and I will take away my side only belong to his things.” 毕业论文 5 (Tan

Her daughter Lena loved a man who was very mean, because of her own experience, she didnt allowed her to follow the same old

Tell me, what is it?”(Tan, 1989: 132) Lena said: “respect, gentle and love.” (Tan, 1989: 132) Then she said: “so, unless he can give you what you need, or leave him.” (Tan, 1989: 132) The third woman is name

34、d AnMei. Her mother was forced to get out of the home when she was very young. But one day, her mother came back because her grandmother was dying. After her grandmother died, she left home with her mother. Finally, her mother died for her dignity, she chose to go to America. Unexpectedly, her daugh

35、ter, Rose, also married to a rich family which has been reduced to humble position. So AnMei said to her daughter:“ Fate cant repeat the cycle in my offspring. Your grandmother had sacrificed her own life, in exchange for my dignity, why should you lose yourself in your marriage?”(Tan, 1989: 108) Mo

36、thers words awaken the daughter. When her husband came to sell the house for consultation, heard her voice:“ this marriage failure is my fault, because Ive been suggesting that you I love not enough beauty, is not good enough. Now I want to cry! You get out of it, you cant take the house, cant take

37、away my children, and cant take away any part of my body!”(Tan, 1989: 132) Her cry saved their marriage because her husband became to hear her words. The forth woman is SuYuan, who had abandoned a twin daughters because of the war chaos that she had no ability to take care of her children. So she le

38、ft the children and her all property under the tree, hoping that some kind man can send the children to her father. But later she was saved on the way, children lost. After she came to America, she placed her all expectation on her daughter June. June thought that she was just a common girl, and she

39、 didnt know that her mothers real hope was letting her live happily. 2 Cultural Conflicts Between Mothers and Daughters 2.1 Different View on Love and Marriage The first and fourth part of the novel talks about four mothers stories. In these stories, they recall their experiences in Chinese feudal s

40、ociety. From these stories, we can see a lot of characteristics and abuses of feudal societys marriage. The story starts by the June who is sitting in the eastern of mahjong table. In the novel, Amy Tan means to put the beginning of the story in a prominent place, in which the east implication is ve

41、ry profound. Because the east is the beginning, the east is the place of sun rising, it also be the direction of the wind. The “east” has deep symbolic significance in this novel. It not only refers to the geographical position of the east, but also alludes to China and the long history of Chinese t

42、raditional culture. Junes mother, SuYuan, although she experienced the hardships, escaped from the chaos, then came to the 毕业论文 6 United States and started a new life, she lost everything: her parents, siblings, husband and the twin daughters; AnMei escaped from a feudal family, but all her liberty
