7、续传扬神圣真理，其结果便无异于生命的死亡。由此可以体会弥尔顿失明后内心的极度悲痛。(2) Ere half my days：before half my days，还没到半生。有的批评家指出，据柏拉图所说，人的正常寿命为百年(理想国 Republic ，X 615)， 圣经中也有百年之说(新约 以赛亚书65：20)。弥尔顿全盲时年 44 岁，因此“ 还没到半生 “。 (3) dark world and wide：dark and wide world，弥尔顿常用形容词十名词 +形容词结构。 (4) And that one talent：and(when l consider how)tha
8、t one talent。Talant 是古希伯莱人计算银子的单位。根据新约马太福音 (25 ：1430)的寓言，有一个主人出门远行，走前交给他三个仆人中的一个仆人一个 talent，但那个仆人却挖了个洞，把 talent 藏在里面，未能用之获利，因此受到归来的主人严厉斥责。但弥尔顿先用 talent 来指自己的 light(第 l 行) ，后面又用来指自己的文学才能(literary talent)。弥尔顿认为，正如钱财必须加以充分利用，不可像守财奴那样埋在地下，他也必须充分施展才能，否则同样会受到主人(上帝) 的严厉斥责。 (5)which is death to hide：正常的语序是
9、to hide which is death(埋起 talent 就无异于死亡) 。根据新约马太福音的故事，主人归来时对埋起 talent 的仆人发怒说：“ 把这无用的仆人，扔到外面黑暗里去，让他切齿痛哭吧!“外面黑暗“原文是 outer darkness，即失乐园( 第l 卷第 72 行；第 3 卷第 16 行 )中所说的 utter darkness，是 “地狱“的象征，意味着 death。(6) Lodged：(is)lodged 。 (7)though my soul more bent：though my soul (be) more bent，虽然我一心想。though 后省略了
10、be，并用虚拟语气。bent ：eager。 (8) To serve therewith my Maker：用它来为我的造物主服务。therewith：with which(指 talent)。(9) Doth God exact day-labour，light denied?：上帝要我做日工，又不给我光? 新约约翰福音(9：4) 说：“We must work the works of him that sent me，while it is day：the night cometh，when no man can work“(我们必须趁着白日，赶快完成那差我来者的工作，因为时间不多，天
11、一黑，就不能工作了)。light denied 是独立结构，相当于条件子句，即 if light is denied。 (10) I fondly ask：fondly 相当于 foolishly，此句是主语，前面七行均附属于此。第 l8 行为一整句，正常的语序是 I fondly ask，“Doth God exact day-labour，light denied? when l consider (a) how my light is spent ere half my days in this dark and wide world and (b)(how) that one tale

15、 only stand and wait)与奔驰海陆的天使(speed and post oer land and ocean)仿佛形成对照，但两者并无根本区别，因为“奔驰海陆“ 的其实也是“ 侍立左右“的，否则就不能随时听从吩咐 (at his bidding)了。无论是“ 奔驰海陆“( 工作) ，还是“ 侍立左右“(忍耐)，只要忠于信仰，坚韧不拔，都同样是为上帝服务。哀失明想到了在这茫茫黑暗的世界里，还未到半生这两眼就已失明，想到了我这个泰伦特，要是埋起来，会招致死亡，却放在我手里无用，虽然我一心想用它服务造物主，免得报账时，得不到他的宽容；想到这里，我就愚蠢地自问，“神不给我光明，还要我做日工?“但“ 忍耐“看我在抱怨，立刻止住我：“神并不要你工作，或还他礼物。谁最能服从他，谁就是忠于职守，他君临万方，只要他一声吩咐，万千个天使就赶忙在海陆奔驰，但侍立左右的，也还是为他服务。“
