To many people the Statue was known as Lady Liberty. She

12、 stands on a small island in New York Harbor, near the great city. In her right hand, she holds the torch with a golden flame higher above her head. Her left arm holds a tablet with the date July 4, 1776. That is the day the United State declared its independence. On her head is a crown of seven poi

13、nts that represent seven continents and seven seas. Around her feet is a broken chain that represents oppression. The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the United States from the people of France. Its official name was Liberty Enlightening the World. Frederic Auguste Bathodie built the Statue in sever

14、al parts. These were shipped to New York and then put together on a base. The Statue was dedicated in a ceremony on October 28, 1886.The Statue itself stands about 46 meters tall. The distance from the ground to the top of the golden torch is about 23 meters. The Statue can be seen from far away. Fo

15、r the many millions of immigrants who came to America on ships, the Statue of Liberty was the first thing they saw. Today, more than 3 million people visit the Statue of liberty each year. Most come by ferryboat from New York. Some visitors go inside the Statue and climb as high as the crown to look

This years observance centers on the relationship between mental health and chronic physical conditions like diabetes and cancer.The World Health Organization says more than four hundred fifty million people suffer from poor mental health. The most common disorder

18、s are depression and psychosis. Mental health experts also include other disorders like drug and alcohol abuse that affect millions of people.Elena Berger is with the World Federation for Mental Health. That organization, based in the United States, held the first World Mental Health Day in 1992. Mr

19、s. Berger says mental health problems are most severe in poor countries that lack the resources to deal with them. She says in a report, “Its an enormous issue. The World Health Organization is highlighting mental health as a neglected issue. In developing countries, a huge number of people, up to e

20、ighty-five percent, dont have access to any form of mental health treatment. There are huge staffing needs. There are no services.” Experts say about half of all mental health problems first appear before the age of fifteen. The countries with the highest percentages of young people are in the devel

21、oping world. That means they are also the countries with the poorest levels of mental health resources. The WHO says many low-and middle-income countries have only one child psychiatrist for every one to four million people. Worldwide, depression is the leading mental health problem, and a leading c

22、ause of disability. In 2009, the World Health Organization estimated that more than one hundred fifty-four million people suffered from depression. But Elena Berger from the Mental Health Federation says other kinds of diseases often get more attention. She says, “People are more focused on communic

23、able diseases and not paying enough attention to the amount of disability there is from mental health conditions. And these are real disabilities where people are not able to work to their full capacity, cant earn an income. And theres a big impact on families as well. “Mrs. Berger says her organization and the WHO are pushing to have governments include mental health care in their development goals. She says this could greatly improve the ability of treatment and services worldwide.
