4、-devo is one of the newest areas of biology. It seeks to explain evolutionary events through the mechanisms of developmental biology. Its major questions are often the questions of the late 1800s which had been left waiting for other generations of biologists to unravel. We are those generations. Th
5、ese questions include: How did wings evolve? How did limbs evolve? How did vertebrates arise from invertebrates? How did vertebrates form their head? The Modern Synthesis of the 1930s and 1940s was the synthesis of evolutionary biology and population genetics. It is one of the greatest explanatory s
6、ystems in science, and it explains incredibly well the origin, maintenance, and evolution of variations within populations of species. However, it did not identify the genes involved in these changes, nor did it explain the origin of higher taxa. Evolutionary developmental biology seeks to “complete
7、” the synthesis by adding developmental genetics to population genetics. Traditional Evo-devo looks at the regulatory regions of genes rather than their coding sequences.
