2、estival The “Chong Yang Festival“ is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, and it is as such known as the Double Ninth Festival. Climbing Mountains登高 People like to climb mountains on this festival, so Double Ninth Festival is also called “Mountain-climbing Festival “.The 9th lunar m

3、onth, with clear autumn sky and bracing air, is a good time for sightseeing. So people, both ancient and present, love to go sightseeing this month. Apart from expelling bad luck and disasters, climbing mounting also indicates “climbing to a higher position”, and it is also an important reason why a

4、ncient people pay much attention about this custom. Another reason that climbing mountains are valued by people, especially by the elderly is that is has a meaning of “climb to a longevous life”. Also for this reason people believe that climbing mountains can make people live a more longevous life.I

5、t is really refreshing to climb mountains and enjoy the beauty of nature at this bright and clear time in autumn. Climbing mountains on Double Ninth Festival was already prevailing in the Tang Dynasty, and a lot of poems were devoted to this custom.Enjoying Chrysanthemum Flowers 赏菊花 Chrysanthemum or

6、iginated in China and was recorded in some Chinese books as early as the 5th century B.C. Chrysanthemum blossom in the ninth lunar month have a beautiful name of “flower of longevity”.菊花产自中国,最早记载始于公元前 5世纪。菊花在阴历九月盛开,它有一个美称 “ 长寿之花 ”Wearing Dogwood插茱萸 The dogwood is a species of evergreen arbor; it is

7、heavy-scented plant whose fruit is edible and stock and leaves can be medicinal materials. They can expel insects, get rid of the humidity, help digestion and cure inner heat. It puts out purple flowers in spring and bears, in autumn, purplish-brown fruit that is sour, puckery and mild in nature. 茱萸

8、为长青乔木。该植物具有浓香,它的果实可食用或干存。它的叶子可以用作药材。茱萸具有驱虫去湿,助消化去内热的功效。春季它开紫色的花,然后开始孕育果实。到了秋天,就结出了紫褐色,味酸,带皱,质感柔软的果实。Eating Double Ninth Cake吃重阳糕 The Double Ninth cake is also known as “chrysanthemum cake” or “flower cake”. It dates back to the Zhou Dynasty. It is said that the cake was originally prepared after aut

9、umn harvests for farmers to have a taste of what was just in season, and it gradually grew into the present cake for people to eat on the Double Ninth Day. 重阳糕又名 “ 菊花糕 ” 或 “ 花糕” 重阳糕的历史可追溯到周朝。相传,最初人们是为了庆祝秋收而制作重阳糕的。到现在,就逐渐发展为在重阳佳节人们常吃的一种糕点了。The Yuanxiao Festival is on the 15th day of the first Chinese

10、 lunar month. It is closely related to the Spring Festival. In the old days, people began preparing for the Spring Festival about 20 days before. However, the Yuanxiao Festival marks the end of the New Year celebrations. And after the Yuanxiao Festival, everything returns to normal。农历正月十五日是元宵节,紧随春节之

11、后。古时候,人们提前二十天为 “ 春节 ”做准备,然而,元宵节为春节画上了句号,元宵之后,一切归于平常。Yuan literally means first, while Xiao refers to night. Yuanxiao is the first time when we see the full moon in the New year. It is traditionally a time for family reunion. The most prominent activity of the Yuanxiao Festival is the display of all

12、types of beautiful lanterns. So the occasion is also called the Lantern Festival。“ 元 ” 是第一的意思, “ 霄 ” 指夜晚。元宵就是新年首个夜晚,元宵节是家庭团聚的传统佳节,最隆重的活动就是展挂各种各样美丽的灯笼,故此,元宵节又叫 “ 灯节 ” 。The Yuanxiao FestivalGuessing lantern riddles猜灯谜 “Guessing lantern riddles“is an essential part of the Festival. Lantern owners write

13、 riddles on a piece of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check their answer. If they are right, they will get a little gift. The activity emerged during peoples enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). As riddle guessing is interesting and full of wisdom, it has become popular among all social strata.猜灯谜也是元宵节活动的一个基本组成部分。灯笼的所有者将谜语写在一张纸条上,然后将纸条展示在灯笼上。如果赏灯者猜出谜语,就将纸条取出,然后找灯笼所有者确认答案。打对的话,他们就可以领取一份小礼品。这个活动起源于宋朝( 9601279 )。猜灯谜活动极富情趣和智慧,因此在全社会广受欢迎。
