24、. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and _21_ care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dogs life, describes a person who has

25、 an unhappy _22_.Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are _23_ for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the _24_

28、dogs are often used to guard this _29_. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and _30_is really not so bad. That is,

36、although some women are still elbow-guided through doors, chauffeured(开车送) in cars, and protected from rain puddles(水坑), they are not shielded from one fundamental consequence of their lower status: Their feelings are accorded less weight than the feelings of men. The feelings of the lower-status pa

37、rty may be discounted in two ways: by considering them rational but unimportant or by considering them irrational and hence dismissible(可不予理会的). An article entitled “On Aggression in Politics: Are Women Judged by a Double Standard?” presented the results of a survey of female politicians. All those

38、surveyed said they believed there was an affective double standard. As Frances Farenthold, the president of Wells College in Aurora, New York, put it: “ You certainly see to it that you dont throw any tantrums(脾气发作 ). The authors conclude:” The data may bear out that the physicians tend to take illness more seriously in men than in women.” Another study of physician interactions with 184 male and 130 female patients concluded that “

44、doctors were more likely to consider the psychological component of the patients illness important when the patient was a woman.” The females assertion that she was physically sick was more likely to be invalidated as something “she just imagined”, something” subjective”, not a response to anything real. 41.
