5、del in literature. In the 19th century, the British writer, Jane Austen created a series of Cinderella images in her masterpiece Pride and Prejudice. Through reading the text of Jane Austin Pride and Prejudice, with the female standpoint, the paper analyses the two Cinderella images in Pride and Pre

6、judice Elizabeth and Jane. This paper will be divided four parts: in the first part, it is the definition of Cinderella image and brief introduction of Pride and Prejudice; in the second part, it analyses the inheritance of Cinderella images in Pride and Prejudice from the common characters of the h

7、eroines: kind, just and loveless; in the third part, with respect to the transcendence of the Cinderella images, it analyses the heroines from female independent consciousness, not attaching to men directly, and the relatively active attitude to the love; in the forth part, it concludes the womens s

8、ocial status in the 19th century from the anterior chapters. These four chapters make a conclusion about the inheritance and transcendence of Cinderella image in Pride and Prejudice. 9、nderella image 3 The Inheritance and Transcendence of Cinderella Image in Pride and Prejudice Introduction Jane Austin, she is a well-known female writer from the 19th century. During these two hundred years, Jane Austins works and her artistic charm is being gradually known and praised. Of course,

10、she is a star in the history of literature. She continued to use the Cinderella fairy tale structure mode in her one masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice, shaping a series of Cinderella female images. At the same time, it was very obvious that this work marked the transformation in that period she lived

11、. Through reading Austins Pride and Prejudice, with the female standpoint, the paper analyzes two typical Cinderella in Pride and Prejudice: Elizabeth and Jane. We can make a conclusion of Cinderellas common characters in this masterpiece: kindness, justice. This is the part decrypts the inheritance

12、 of Cinderella image in this work. On the other hand, with respect to the transcendence of the Cinderella image this is given more significance of that time, two heroines are more active to pursue the love and independence in that time when women were always living under the existence of men. 13、lots in the story can prove that Elizabeth and Jane are much different from their sisters in the family. Finally, by comparing the marriages they got, we can be sure that they are happier than other daughters of Mr. Bennet. This article discusses the issue in the four main aspects: in the first part

General Un

16、derstanding of Cinderella Image in Pride and Prejudice In this chapter, it just gives a definition of the Cinderella image. Who is Cinderella? When is there the first Cinderella image? When is there the first Cinderella story? And, it states the definition of the Cinderella image. Whats more, it mak

17、es a brief introduction of Pride and Prejudice. 1.1 Definition of Cinderella Image Cinderella is a folk tale embodying a myth-element of unjust oppression. Thousands of variants are known throughout the world. The character is a young woman living in unfortunate circumstances that are suddenly chang

18、ed to remarkable 4 fortune. The story was first published by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou contes du temps pass in 1697. The earliest Cinderella image can be traced to the early period. The Greek historian Stella introduced a story about a Greek girl in the 1st century BC. This girl was considere

19、d the earliest Cinderella image. When she was washing clothes beside the stream, suddenly, an eagle flied to her and took her shoes away. However, the shoes dropped in the front of a pharaoh in Memphis. Then, the pharaoh demanded all women to try on the shoes. Finally, he found the Greek girl and ma

20、rried to her. Another first Cinderella image was Ye Xian in China, can be found in the Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang by Tuan Cheng-Shih around 860. In this story, the hardworking and lovely girl made a friend with a fish, the reincarnation of her mother, who was killed by her stepmother and sis

21、ter. Ye Xian saved the bones, which were magic, and they help her dress appropriately for the New Year Festival. When she lost her slipper after being recognized by her stepfamily, the king found her slipper and fell in love with her eventually, rescuing her from her cruel stepmother. In addition, t

22、here are many similar Cinderella images in One Thousand and One Nights in middle Ages. The word Cinderella has, by analogy, come to mean one whose attributes are unrecognized, or one who unexpectedly achieves recognition or success after a period of obscurity and neglect. The still-popular story of

23、Cinderella continues to influence popular culture internationally, lending plot elements, allusions, and tropes to a wide variety of media. In the 19th century, the famous writer, Jane Austin installed their works into the frame of the fairy tale, and continued to use the mode of the Cinderella fair

24、y tale to create many Cinderella images. Through the works of Jane Austen, we can easily find the existence of a similar character and story structure in her six works, which is the Cinderella image and the fairy tale mode, just like Pride and Prejudice. She shaped a series of Cinderella images; the

25、 most typical images are the heroines, Elizabeth and Jane. 1.2 Brief Introduction of Pride and Prejudice This story was written by Jane Austin since 1796 to 1797. Her father was deeply moved after reading this book, and then he gave it to the publisher, hoping it could be published. But the publishe

26、r disappointed them at last. Jane Austin rewrote this story and renamed it Pride and Prejudice. Finally, it was published in 1813 (Brown, 1985: 134-138). This work originally derives from daily life; it vividly reflects the rural life in England in the late 18th and the early 19th century. The story

27、 follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, 5 and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Mer

28、yton in Hertfordshire, near London. Although Jane Austin was only 21 when she wrote Pride and Prejudice, her sharp observation of social lives made the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her work are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a

29、problem in mathematics. She disclosed mid-class young ladies different ideas of marriage and love through describing the different ways in which the Bennet girls doing with their marriage problems (Dai, 2007: 16-20). It gives rise to a series of Cinderella images, being welcome and praised by the re

30、aders in different times, especially female readers. Though the story was set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest i

31、n the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austens memorable characters or themes. To date, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwide. As a monumental literary work, this work was also made into a film and TV programmer. 2. I

32、nheritance of Cinderella Image in Pride and Prejudice In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen used the Cinderella fairy tale narrative mode to expand the plot of the whole story. This story was based on the everyday life to describe the love and marriage between men and women in the middle class and ref

33、lected the life in the countryside in England. Different people have different opinions on this work. But, all in all, we can conclude that Jane Austin is a great write who creates many popular Cinderella images in this work. So, in this process, there has been a series of Cinderella images to be lo

34、ved by readers. Most of them are from Bennetts family, especially the heroine, Elizabeth Bennet and Jane Bennet. Pride and Prejudice focuses on two kinds of female image: one is image of mother, anther is image of daughter. Jane Bennet is the eldest Bennet sister. Twenty-two years old when the novel

35、 begins, she is considered the most beautiful young lady in the neighborhood. Her character is contrasted with Elizabeths as sweeter, shyer, and equally sensible, but not as clever; her most notable trait is a desire to see only the good in others. Jane is closest to Elizabeth, and her character is

36、often contrasted with that of Elizabeth. She is favored by her mother because of her beauty. Elizabeth Bennet is the protagonist of the novel. Compared with Jane Bennet, she is more passionate and real. Besides, she is very clever, brave, and emotional. At first, 6 Mr.Bennet also likes her best. She

37、 is the second of the Bennet daughters, she is 20 years old and is intelligent, lively, attractive and witty but with a tendency to judge on first impressions and perhaps to be a little selective of the evidence upon which she bases her judgments. As the plot begins, her closest relationships are wi

38、th her father; her sister, Jane; her aunt, Mrs. Gardiner; and her best friend, Charlotte Lucas. As the story progresses, so does her relationship with Fitzwilliam Darcy, who belongs to a higher social class than Elizabeth. The course of Elizabeth and Darcys relationship is ultimately decided when Da

39、rcy overcomes his pride, and Elizabeth overcomes her prejudice, leading to them both surrendering to the love they have for each other. The reader sees the unfolding plot and the other characters mostly from her viewpoint. In this section, it will mainly describe the inheritance of the Cinderella im

40、ages in Pride and Prejudice. Comparing the two heroines, Elizabeth and Jane, this chapter will focus on the characters of the Cinderella, Elizabeth and Jane. 41、As we know, Cinderella has a poor family. In the most popular C inderella story, written by Grimm Brothers. In this story, the Cinderella was born in a poor family. Her mother had early death. And she was always abused by the stepmother and stepsister. It involves the main character Cinderella who l

42、ives with her stepmother and her stepsisters. However, they treat Cinderella like garbage. They make her do these mundane chores and tasks every single day. Then, invitations to the ball are sent out. The prince is looking for his new wife. Cinderella is not allowed to go (Grimm, 1812: 123-156). Acc

43、ording to the traditional story, the living condition of Cinderella is very bad and terrible. Turn to our eyes to Pride and Prejudice. The heroines, especially Elizabeth and Jane were in a same situation of life. As we see, they lived in a worse living condition than heroes, Darcy and Mr. Bingley so

44、 that their mother always wanted to marry them to rich men like Mr. Bingley. This point is same. As the Cinderellas condition, we can from the state it from the following plot: at the first party, Mr. Bingley asked Jane to dance some times. After the party, her mother, Miss. Bennet was very happy an

45、d showed off it to everyone she met (Austin, 1917: 23-25). It plot could happened because of their poor living condition. On the other hand, like the traditional story. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth and Jane were also lake of love from their mother.
