5、text of Lesson 3 War Memories. Now Id like you to tell me how World War I was started. S1: World War I started when Austria declared war on Serbia. Then Germany jumped in and declared war on Russia and France. S2: World War One started in 1914 and ended in 1918. World War 1 started because of mainly
6、 two reasons. The first reason is because of Germany. Germany was trying to find out a way to attack and conquer Austria-Hungary. Of course since Germany was doing this everyone in Europe knew about it too. The tensions in Europe got really high. In 1914 Europe started to divide and get a weaker env
7、ironment. They started to attack each other and mainly Germany. Tensions were high between industrialized countries over colonies. Tensions were also caused by the nationalism that different nationality groups within empires had. Many countries also formed alliances for mutual defense. The Triple Al
8、liance, between Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary, and the Triple Entente, between France, Great Britain, and Russia, were formed. (Although later, Italy joined the Allies.) So, tensions were high in 1914 when Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne, was assassinated by a Slavic nati
9、onalist, Gavrilo Princip. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia, Serbias historic protector, mobilized the borders of Austria-Hungary and Germany, a likely ally of Austria-Hungary. Germany demanded that Russia stop its threatening acts and demanded France to stay neutral if war were to brea
10、k out. Both refused. Germany declared war on Russia on August 1 and declared war on France on August 3. Germany went through the neutral country of Belgium to attack. Great Britain declared war on Germany on August 4 because of this. Then, a great war was started, using U-boats (submarines, introduc
11、ed by Germany), poison gas, tanks, and machine guns for the first time . T: Thanks, youve done a very good job. What about World War II? S3: World War Two started in 1939 mainly because of Germany. When Hitler took over Germany, he wanted to take some countries in Europe. When he did take over count
12、ries, Britain and France got mad at Germany. They told them to stop invading countries. Britain also said that if they took over Poland, they and France would go to war with Germany. But Germany did not listen and invaded Poland. Then Britain and France got mad at Germany, and declared war on German
13、y, September 3, 1939. Thus World War Two had started. T: Thanks. Can we say both the world wars were started for reasons of “greed”? What about the American Civil War? S4: After Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he did away with the slavery. But the South wanted to break away from the union and
14、 set up their own country, where they would be free to keep slavery. Thus the American Civil War broke out in 1861. T: Thanks for sharing with us. So it is clear that the war was started for reasons of “race prejudices”. Now open your books and turn to Page 25. Lets deal with Ex 8. Step II Speaking
15、Deal with Ex 8. Ask students to make a presentation about the reasons what wars are fought. It is better for students to make the presentation with the help of the multimedia computer so that they can make their presentation attracting and vivid. T: Wars are fought for many different reasons. Some a
16、re fought for the good of mankind. Others are the result of mans greed and prejudices. Now Id like you to make a presentation about the reasons. Your presentation should include the following three questions. 1. For what reasons could wars be fought for the good of mankind? 2. List some wars in hist
17、ory that fought for the justice of mankind. 3. List wars that were fought for reasons of greed or prejudices. Students are given 15 minutes to present their reasons. Only one in each group is given the chance to present the reasons in front of the class. Step III Vocabulary Ask students to read Lexi
18、con, page 104. Then deal with Ex 7 on Page 25. When doing Ex 5, if necessary, encourage students to use a good dictionary. Step IV Practice Deal with the exercises in Lesson 3 in Language Power on Page 70. The key to the exercises is to practice the given words. So it is vital to make sure students
19、aware the meaning of every given word. Ex 1 is a bit difficult for students. They may work in groups and use a good dictionary to help them. Or Teacher may explain the differences between the given words. This will make the exercises less difficult for students. Ex 2&3 are not so difficult. Students
20、 may be asked to do Ex 2&3 individually and eight minutes later check the answers with the whole class. T: Yes. Have you ever seen the movies? Ss: Yes. Star Wars is the most successful series of science fiction movies. T: Would you like to learn more about Star Wars? Please open your books on Page 72 and read the text.
